Happy 10th Birthday, Social Focus Consulting!

This year's birthday logo was inspired by the Korean dalgona candy as popularized in the worldwide TV phenom, Squid Game

Wow! A whole decade's worth of memories has come and gone. We have lots to be proud about, and I'll get more into that in a second, but what's not been as widely shared is our challenges scaling from 2018 onward. I've always wanted to digitize Social Focus (SFC) as a way to scale, so in 2019 I joined a technology-based social enterprise to learn the ins and outs of the high growth start-up world. I loved every minute of it, but the most important thing I learned coming out of that experience was that the non-profit sector is a super tough sector to sell to, digital or not.

During that time, I put SFC into "hibernation." That was meant to be more of a short-term pause on the company. After my time with the start-up, it's with a heavy heart that I've decided to put SFC into a more long-term "cryostasis." I've put too much into the brand to put away SFC forever so it may come back in some form or another one day.

For now, while I'm certainly not done being excited about the social sector, I do want to broaden my career experience. Right now, I'm exploring a variety of roles, sectors, and industries, so if you want to hook me up or know someone looking for an entrepreneurial professional with innovation up the wazoo, let me know.

In the meanwhile, let's celebrate 10 great years of Social Focus Consulting:

  • On-boarded over 100 student team members from Queen's University, Western University, University of Toronto, and York University. These students have gone onto successful careers at Deloitte, KPMG, Kearney, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and more.
  • Completed dozens of projects from charities and non-profits all across Canada
  • Helped NPOs raise more funds and participants (e.g. 400% for a social enterprise, 61% for a youth organization, 25% for a community organization)
  • Published an Ivey Publishing business school learning case, in use by a Canadian telecom and universities from all over the world including Canada, USA, Mexico, Kazakhstan, Spain, and Philippines
  • Lectured, presented, judged, moderated, or mentored at over two dozen events and courses at Queen's, Schulich, Rotman, Ivey, and more
  • Featured in Globe & Mail, Rogers Magazine, Queen's Alumni Magazine, Charity Village, and more
  • Honoured at Toronto Region Board of Trade Business Excellence Awards, EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, and Air Miles Small Business Achievement Awards

My heartfelt thanks to every single person who's been a part of this journey. This could not have happened without your shared vision for a more impactful world.

"'Cause I've had the time of my life. And I owe it all to you"

Happy 9th birthday, Social Focus Consulting!

A tattoo-like art piece to celebrate SFC's 9th birthday

In December 2011, I founded Social Focus Consulting and every anniversary year thereafter I've posted a celebratory message and logo. This year is different and I'm not referring to *that* part of 2020.

This year is the first full year I haven't been actively running SFC. Instead, I've been heading up marketing for the social-purpose start-up Hopeful Inc. We've developed an outstanding product that's helping charities take the guess work out of social media-based fundraising. Traditionally, companies aim to get high engagement with their posts. We can use posting best practices such as finding the right day of week, time of day, use of hashtags, etc., but these are just some variables in an ocean of posts. We're not always sure of the success of a post until we post. Further, engagement in the forms of likes or shares doesn't always lead to funds raised. That's where Hopeful Inc. comes in. "Go Beyond Likes. Get More Funds" is the tagline I developed to help say everything I just said in a concise and impactful way.

A year ago, we only had mock-ups of the product. I then worked with a design team and potential NPO clients to fine-tune the look and feel of the platform. Initially, we positioned the product as an advanced social analytics tool that would supplement existing platforms such as Hootsuite. Although this was a blue ocean strategy for us, in the eyes of the customer, it made our product look like a "nice to have" rather than a "need to have." Therefore, I recommended that the dev team include posting functionality to reach parity with our competitors. Although this puts us in direct competition with long-time incumbents such as Hootsuite, our analytics and AI features remain as key differentiators.

Concurrently, we worked on developing partnerships, including with Silent Partner Software. The firm is a well-known name in the non-profit tech space and has offices across North America. On the investor side, we received seed funding at the beginning of the year and bolstered this more recently thanks to our acceptance into the Berkeley Skydeck accelerator program based in Silicon Valley. This was a tremendous honour as we were one of only 16 start-ups chosen from over 1800 applications. The program has given us access to world-class advisors and talent from Berkley University of which the program is affiliated with. To cap off one hell of a year, we've been named one of 101 Best Analytics Startups Of 2020.

Despite all that's going on in the world, I can say confidently that I made the right decision to join this start-up. Even though it's not under my ownership, I've gained knowledge in product development, start-up operations, and start-up fundraising which is invaluable to my career moving forward. And don't fret, Social Focus isn't gone. It's just hibernating. It will always be a part of me no matter what which is why I found it appropriate to mark this year's milestone with a tattoo-like logo.

Thank you for giving me the stage to share how this new journey is going so far. I aim to bring you even greater news in 2021 and wish you the same success, prosperity, and happiness.

Happy 8th birthday, Social Focus Consulting!

SFC's 8 birthday logo made with mini plastic "shot" cups filled with tea
This year's logo made with disposable shot cups filled with a blend of soul-soothing teas.

Hard to fathom that it's been almost a decade since I came up with a wild idea to create a consulting firm that exclusively services non-profits, and exclusively staffed with business students. In our eight years of existence, over 100 students have helped dozens upon dozens of charities across Ontario raise more donations and awareness. We're fortunate to call the Ottawa Senators Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club as some of our clients. We were featured in the Globe & Mail as one of Canada's 10 Most Remarkable Small Businesses and other media outlets such as Rogers Magazine and TVO. The company gave me speaking opportunities at dozens of events across Ontario including the Scale-Up Summit at Queen's.

As we reflect on our accomplishments over the last eight years, we just as mindfully look forward. As eight is an auspicious number in Chinese culture, it is no wonder that we have a very special and exciting announcement to make. I've joined a new social-purpose start-up called Hopeful Inc. to head up its marketing department. We're building an analytics platform that's taking the guess work out of social media and empowering non-profits to raise more donations through data-driven decisions.

As I take my knowledge and connections in the NPO sector into this start-up, I can't help but feel that this is probably the closest Social Focus will ever be to getting acquired. Eight years ago, I always knew I would eventually either transition Social Focus into a technology firm or join one, and I ended up choosing the latter. It's been a great learning experience so far to be part of a high growth start-up and I look forward to sharing more news as we build the product and brand.

In the meanwhile, thank you so much to all my Social Folks, the business students and alum, who drove the Social Focus engine over the years, and all my peeps around the world. You all inspire me to be a better business person and better human being.

Happy 8th birthday Social Focus Consulting! Now, let's take a shot at this.

Happy 7th birthday, Social Focus Consulting!

This year's logo made with blueberries, apples, and one tenacious raspberry.

With SFC celebrating its 7th birthday in 2018, we can certainly say that 7 truly is a lucky number. This year, we finished one of our largest projects to date. The fact that it came from a referral who was one of our first clients made it that much more special. This newest project was to develop a business plan for a rural township's proposed community centre. It was great getting to know the residents, their needs, and how something as simple as a community centre (or hub) could be so meaningful. We're looking forward to seeing the place become a reality and attending their grand opening one day! This project also marked another milestone as we welcomed our first team member from the Queen’s JD/MBA program.

Over the year, we've increased our number of partnerships, working with organization such as Power Unit Youth Organization and its summer-long business competition, The E3 Challenge, McGill University, Association of Fundraising Professionals, and Charity Village, while continuing our work with Queen's through guest-lectures and speaking engagements at conferences.

Further, we're very proud to announce the publishing of a business case on the Social Focus story. Co-authored with Queen’s Professor Anthony Goerzen, the case was written to highlight the successes and struggles of the company, with a focus on its business model. We're hoping students and entrepreneurs will better understand what it’s like to run a social impact business, and be motivated to start one of their own. Please support us by purchasing a copy from Harvard Business Review: https://hbr.org/product/social-focus-consulting-evaluating-its-long-term-feasibility/W18448-PDF-ENG.

While we've made some progress this year, the case serves as a living reminder of our need to continue to refine our business model. Moving forward, we'll further explore how to involve corporations in addition to non-profits as stakeholders and customers. Thank you to everyone for your support this past year and be on the lookout for more big things as we write the next chapter of our social impact and innovation story.
